Prose #3

Henry David Thoreau - Walden Pond
"I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived. I did not wish to live what was not life, living is so dear; nor did I wish to practise resignation, unless it was quite necessary. I wanted to live deep and suck out all the marrow of life, to live so sturdily and Spartan- like as to put to rout all that was not life, to cut a broad swath and shave close, to drive life into a corner, and reduce it to its lowest terms, and, if it proved to be mean, why then to get the whole and genuine meanness of it, and publish its meanness to the world; or if it were sublime, to know it by experience, and be able to give a true account of it in my next excursion."

  1. This poem was very good. I see how he wants to get out of the busy life of the city and just sit in the wonderful world of nature.
I think that the main message would be the face that he wants to be alone with nature and be given the chance to interact and connect with it, because touch with nature and also are losing touch with alot of people have been losing themselves and their families. Also there is a simile in the prose that is "as to put to rout all that wasn not life,"

  2. I THINK THAT THIS POEM IS SAYING THAT LIVE IN NATURE AND LIVE LIFE IN ITS SIMPLEST FORM AND THAT THE ONLY WAY TO DO THAT IS TO GO INTO NATURE AND LIVE ALONE. A POETIC DEVICE I SEE BEING USED IS A SIMLE "as to put to rout all that was not life,"

  3. I picked this prose because it talks about Henry David Thoreau's life. The main message is how he wanted to live all by himself in the woods at Walden Pond. There is a simile in it that says,"like as to put to rout all that was not life."

  4. This poem is okay. What he is saying is that he wants to get out of the fast lane and slow it down a bit. Like he said he dosn't want to die and not be able to live. So he goes to nature and trys to find sanctum.

  5. I think his one is okay. I don't really like it but I actually understand this one. I relate to it though because I like nature and would love to live in the woods and also because i too have had a hard life lately and wish i could escape from it all.

  9. I really like this. The message I got from it is that Henry David Thoreau wanted to find himself again by not being around all the advances. Henry David Thoreau also uses a simile "Like as to put to rout all that was not life". I disagree with Kayla because he just doesn't want to escape he wants to find his true self again.

  13. I think that this is a great prose. I feel this way because I love nature and I respect that he like how he didn't chose to live in like a real house he chose to live outdoors. He also wanted to live off the land which probably lead to a hard life trying to get food and other essentials. The poetic divice that is used in this prose is a simlie

I agree with Allison Cote because she described that he wants to live by himself.

  14. This prose is very good and descriptive. He says that he had not lived until he went to Walden Pond to live in the cabin. The theme is that you experience a lot in nature that is good.
He uses a lot of imagery in the prose. He did a good job describing it.

    I agree with Robby Sabbag

  15. This is a great poem. It tells the reader how most people do not truely live their lives, and that they realy should.
A poetic device that I saw was imagry. I saw this because Thoreau described how we should life with great detail. There was also a simile when he says,"like as to put to rout all that was not life."
    - M. Herrmann

I agree with Steph about disagreeing with Kayla because, yeah...the same reason as Steph lol

  16. heres my comment in german! XD

..the gleicher Grund als Steph lol
