Poem #1 -

Give All To Love - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Give all to love; Obey thy heart; Friends, kindred, days, Estate, good-fame, Plans, credit and the Muse, Nothing refuse.

'T is a brave master; Let it have scope: Follow it utterly, Hope beyond hope: High and more high It dives into noon, With wing unspent, Untold intent; But it is a god, Knows its own path And the outlets of the sky.

It was never for the mean; It requireth courage stout. Souls above doubt, Valor unbending, It will reward, They shall return More than they were, And ever ascending.

Leave all for love; Yet, hear me, yet, One word more thy heart behoved, One pulse more of firm endeavor, Keep thee to-day, To-morrow, forever, Free as an Arab Of thy beloved.
Cling with life to the maid; But when the surprise, First vague shadow of surmise Flits across her bosom young, Of a joy apart from thee, Free be she, fancy-free; Nor thou detain her vesture's hem, Nor the palest rose she flung From her summer diadem.

Though thou loved her as thyself, As a self of purer clay, Though her parting dims the day, Stealing grace from all alive; Heartily know, When half-gods go , The gods arrive.

  1. I like this poem because it has a message of positivity and is encouraging the reader to make the most out of what they have in front of them "obey thy heart" is stating that one should trust their own individuality, which is another sentiment I really like about the poem. Love is personified here as being a "brave master".

  4. "Nor the palest rose she flung From her summer diadem" .This is my favorite quote from this poem because it is talking about how even the palest rose which means love is the joyfullest thing in the world. Even though she has the most riches , she thanks the world for the palest rose she might have which she states as love. - Vessi

I believe that what this poem says is that love is a beautiful thing, and that people give up alot of things to have a perfect life. If you give up something, something else will always be there to reward you, to replace what you have lost.
In this poem, there is imagery when the poem says "But when the surprise, First vague shadow of surmise Flits across her bosom young".

  8. I completely disagree with Jake on this poem because he has made no sense and this poem refers to nothing about saying "this poem shows that you should treat people with respect and the will treat you with respect back".

  11. I like this poem. I feel that it shows a positive tone. It tells how love is beautiful and that being an individual is an important thing. When they compare love to a "brave master" and that it has "hope beyond hope" it shows that love is an individual and brave thing and it is hard to show, yet an important thing. Also by comparing love to a brave master it is a poetic device which is metaphor.

  20. victoria d. & tori enjoyed reading this line, "It was never for the mean; It requireth courage stout. Souls above doubt, Valor unbending, It will reward, They shall return More than they were, And ever ascending." the meaning of this qoute is that courage and wisedom will preveal and be extremly helpful to people, when people believe in themselves they are rewarded with bravery and heroism.
