Give All To Love - Ralph Waldo Emerson
Give all to love; Obey thy heart; Friends, kindred, days, Estate, good-fame, Plans, credit and the Muse, Nothing refuse.
'T is a brave master; Let it have scope: Follow it utterly, Hope beyond hope: High and more high It dives into noon, With wing unspent, Untold intent; But it is a god, Knows its own path And the outlets of the sky.
It was never for the mean; It requireth courage stout. Souls above doubt, Valor unbending, It will reward, They shall return More than they were, And ever ascending.
Leave all for love; Yet, hear me, yet, One word more thy heart behoved, One pulse more of firm endeavor, Keep thee to-day, To-morrow, forever, Free as an Arab Of thy beloved.
Cling with life to the maid; But when the surprise, First vague shadow of surmise Flits across her bosom young, Of a joy apart from thee, Free be she, fancy-free; Nor thou detain her vesture's hem, Nor the palest rose she flung From her summer diadem.
Though thou loved her as thyself, As a self of purer clay, Though her parting dims the day, Stealing grace from all alive; Heartily know, When half-gods go , The gods arrive.
I like this poem because it has a message of positivity and is encouraging the reader to make the most out of what they have in front of them "obey thy heart" is stating that one should trust their own individuality, which is another sentiment I really like about the poem. Love is personified here as being a "brave master".
ReplyDeletei like this poem because it really focuses on the individualiity of a persons well-being and its definetly very positive and has a kind of up beat sense to it and thats what i like most about this poem
ReplyDelete"Though thou loved her as thyself, As a self of purer clay, Though her parting dims the day, Stealing grace from all alive" i think that this sentance is saying that he loves this girl like he loves him self.

"Nor the palest rose she flung From her summer diadem" .This is my favorite quote from this poem because it is talking about how even the palest rose which means love is the joyfullest thing in the world. Even though she has the most riches , she thanks the world for the palest rose she might have which she states as love. - Vessi
ReplyDeleteI think this poem is really great. I think that it personifys love and says it in a away we can all understand. When love is said to be a "Brave Master" I think that it is really true. Meaning that you have to be brave to risk love. - Val
ReplyDeletethis poem shows that you should treat people with respect and the will treat you with respect back
ReplyDeleteI really like this poem, because it speaks the truth, and it enforces a positive tone.
ReplyDeleteI believe that what this poem says is that love is a beautiful thing, and that people give up alot of things to have a perfect life. If you give up something, something else will always be there to reward you, to replace what you have lost.
In this poem, there is imagery when the poem says "But when the surprise, First vague shadow of surmise Flits across her bosom young".
-Kristy Lavoie period 2.
I completely disagree with Jake on this poem because he has made no sense and this poem refers to nothing about saying "this poem shows that you should treat people with respect and the will treat you with respect back".
ReplyDelete-Austin Linehan
And Jake should be rewarded with no credit at all and everyone who has read this comment has become more idiotic for now reading this.
ReplyDeleteThe theme of the poem is positive. It gives alot of detail and puts images in your mind.
ReplyDeleteI like this poem. I feel that it shows a positive tone. It tells how love is beautiful and that being an individual is an important thing. When they compare love to a "brave master" and that it has "hope beyond hope" it shows that love is an individual and brave thing and it is hard to show, yet an important thing. Also by comparing love to a brave master it is a poetic device which is metaphor.
ReplyDeleteI like this peom because it shows that being an individual is important. This poem shows love is beautiful. It has a very positvive tone. The author uses a metaphor at compare love to a "brave master" which means that love is a hard thing to show and it is imporatnt.
ReplyDeleteI like this poem because it has a positive tone. it talks about the individuality and trust. it says that you should trust your self with your individual choice.
ReplyDeleteThe poetic advice that i found in this poem was a metaphor. the poet is comparing love to a brave master.
i think caitlin did an excellent job on describing how she felt about the poem and what it was about. she's such a cutie and a smartie ;]
ReplyDeletelove taylor! :] <3

ReplyDeletelove caitlin! ( : <3
"Though thou loved her as thyself" This is a smilie because he loved her as much as he loved himself. I believe that its a posative attude that the writer is trying to show.
ReplyDeleteI agree with becca
i like this peom because it expresses indivuailty and its a positve tone to it.it says that you should trust your self with your individual choice. in the peom i found a metaphor when it compares love to the brave master.
ReplyDeletei think austin is very rong because her is makeing fun of jake. its jakes opionion and austin doesnt have to get on his mind about so i think hes wrong and he makes no sennse
I like this poem because it shows how love is strong no matter what happens to it. Love is personified when the poem says "...it is a god, Knows its own path And the outlets of the sky." Love is a beautiful thing and if you find it don't take advantage of it because it is very special.
ReplyDeleteI agree with both Taylor and Caitlin. They made brilliant observations about this poem.<333333333
~Taylor Bergstrom:)
"Though thou loved her as thyself". In the poem he used personification. Love is personified here as being a "brave master".In this poem it has a positive attitude and a loving one.
ReplyDeleteI agree with becca and val because they said the same idea that i had.

ReplyDeletevictoria d. & tori enjoyed reading this line, "It was never for the mean; It requireth courage stout. Souls above doubt, Valor unbending, It will reward, They shall return More than they were, And ever ascending." the meaning of this qoute is that courage and wisedom will preveal and be extremly helpful to people, when people believe in themselves they are rewarded with bravery and heroism.
ReplyDeleteI agree with vessi , because it is talking about how even the palest rose which means love is the joyfullest thing in the world.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Caitlyn because the the poem has a positive view on life. the poem expresses that love is a very important emotion that paople encounter. The poem also says show respect for family, friends and elders. There is an example of personification "T is a brave master"
ReplyDeleteBrady
I like this poem because it really shows that you should give all for the one you love and "seize the day". it also says that even if the feeling of love does not work out there are better things that will come,"Though her parting dims the day, Stealing grace from all alive; Heartily know, When half-gods go , The gods arrive."
ReplyDeletein this poem love is personified as "being a brave master". this poem is also expressive of individuality and the importance of love.
I agree with Kristy because she made very observant points that she proved well with quotes.
I agree with xoxally5xox and Caitsoccer53 because they basically wrote exactly what I wrote, using different words. Except that love is beautiful, and that it uses a possitive tone. (copiers =]). We each have an individual point of view, and understand this poem and its true value.
ReplyDelete-Kristy L.
I agree with Kristy because i think she summed it up clearly. Also because she backed herself up with some quotes from it. She also also feels what i feel about this.
